Time Format Converter

Convert 24-hour time to 12-hour AM/PM format and vice versa. Includes military time notation, spoken time, and a 24-hour conversion cheat sheet.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you add is uploaded.

What the Time Format Converter does

Converting between the 24-hour clock and 12-hour AM/PM time is a daily necessity for travellers, shift workers, logistics teams, and developers working with timestamps. The 24-hour format eliminates the ambiguity between day and night, but everyday speech and consumer devices still rely on the 12-hour AM/PM clock. This converter switches between both systems instantly in your browser, translates time into military notation, and provides an interactive 24-hour reference chart to eliminate confusion around midnight and noon.

How to convert 24-hour time to 12-hour AM/PM

  1. Select your conversion direction: 24-Hour to 12-Hour, or 12-Hour to 24-Hour.
  2. Enter the hour and minutes into the input fields, or click Current Time to load your local clock.
  3. For 24-hour to 12-hour: any hour above 12 subtracts 12 and becomes PM; hours 01 to 11 remain the same and become AM; hour 00 becomes 12:00 AM (midnight).
  4. For 12-hour to 24-hour: select AM or PM. For PM hours (except 12 PM), add 12 to the hour. For 12 AM, set the hour to 00.
  5. Copy your preferred output format: 12-hour standard, 24-hour digital, military time, or natural spoken time.

The Time Format Converter runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or logged.

How it works

24-Hour to 12-Hour Conversion

Hour 00 → 12:MM AM; Hour 12 → 12:MM PM; Hour > 12 → (Hour - 12):MM PM; Hour < 12 → Hour:MM AM

If the 24-hour hour is 00, it is 12 AM (midnight). If 12, it is 12 PM (noon). For hours 13 through 23, subtract 12 and label as PM. For hours 01 through 11, keep the hour and label as AM.

Example: 17:45 → (17 - 12):45 PM = 5:45 PM. 00:30 → 12:30 AM. 09:15 → 9:15 AM.

12-Hour to 24-Hour Conversion

12:MM AM → 00:MM; HH:MM AM → HH:MM; 12:MM PM → 12:MM; HH:MM PM → (HH + 12):MM

For AM hours, keep the hour as-is except for 12 AM which becomes 00. For PM hours, add 12 to hours 1 through 11, while 12 PM stays 12.

Example: 8:30 PM → (8 + 12):30 = 20:30. 12:45 AM → 00:45. 11:20 AM → 11:20.

When to use it

Flight bookings and travel itineraries

Airlines, train services, and international hotels almost exclusively use 24-hour time to avoid missed connections. Converting 19:40 to 7:40 PM or 06:15 to 6:15 AM ensures you never confuse morning departures with evening arrivals.

Medical, emergency, and military logs

Healthcare facilities and armed forces use military and 24-hour time so critical records are never misinterpreted. A patient receiving medication at 2100 hours or a shift report filed at 0330 hours leaves no doubt about the exact timing.

Payroll timesheets and decimal hours

Employee punch clocks and attendance software frequently export in 24-hour notation. Converting punch times into standard 12-hour equivalents and decimal hours makes verifying hours worked straightforward.

Global team meetings and cross-timezone scheduling

When coordinating across continents, international teams often state meeting invitations in 24-hour UTC or local time. Quick conversion lets team members confirm whether a 16:00 invite conflicts with their local evening plans.

Good to know

  • The easiest mental shortcut for 24-hour time: for any hour from 13 to 23, subtract 2 from the second digit and drop the 1 (e.g. 17:00 → 7 - 2 = 5 → 5:00 PM; 21:00 → 1 - 2 = -1 → 9:00 PM).
  • Midnight is 00:00 in 24-hour time and 12:00 AM on a 12-hour clock. Noon is 12:00 in 24-hour time and 12:00 PM on a 12-hour clock.
  • Military time removes the colon and always uses four digits (e.g., 0900 instead of 9:00 AM, and 1530 instead of 3:30 PM).
  • In digital clocks, 24:00 is rarely displayed — the clock immediately rolls over to 00:00 for the new day.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time?

If the hour is 00, convert it to 12:00 AM (midnight). For hours 01 through 11, keep the hour number and append AM. For hour 12, it is 12:00 PM (noon). For hours 13 through 23, subtract 12 from the hour and append PM (e.g. 15:45 becomes 3:45 PM).

Is 12:00 AM midnight or noon?

12:00 AM is midnight (the very start of the day, written as 00:00 in 24-hour time). 12:00 PM is noon (midday, written as 12:00 in 24-hour time).

What is the difference between military time and 24-hour time?

Military time is based on the 24-hour clock but does not use a colon separator and is always written with four digits (e.g., 0800 instead of 08:00, or 1730 instead of 17:30). In military speech, 0800 is spoken as 'zero eight hundred hours'.

Does 24:00 exist?

In ISO 8601 and military terminology, 24:00 can be used to denote the exact end of a day, equivalent to 00:00 of the following day. Modern digital clocks and computers virtually always roll over to 00:00.

Why do some countries use 24-hour time while others use 12-hour time?

Most European, Latin American, and Asian countries use the 24-hour clock for official timetables, business, and broadcasting because it completely prevents AM/PM errors. English-speaking nations (such as the United States, Canada, and Australia) traditionally prefer the 12-hour AM/PM format in everyday life, while reserving the 24-hour clock for military, aviation, and computing.

What does AM and PM stand for?

AM stands for 'Ante Meridiem', Latin for 'before midday' (the hours from midnight to 11:59 AM). PM stands for 'Post Meridiem', Latin for 'after midday' (the hours from noon to 11:59 PM).

How do decimal hours work in payroll?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of 60. For example, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. An employee working from 08:30 to 17:15 has worked 8.75 hours.
