Markdown Table Generator

Create and edit Markdown tables in a visual spreadsheet grid with column alignment and HTML export.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you add is uploaded.

What the Markdown Table Generator does

Markdown tables are fiddly to type by hand: every row needs the right number of pipes, and one missing separator breaks the whole table. This generator gives you a spreadsheet-style grid instead. Type into the cells or paste a block copied from Excel or Google Sheets, add or remove rows and columns, set each column to left, centre or right alignment, and copy neatly aligned Markdown or an equivalent HTML table, ready for a README, a GitHub issue, documentation or a blog post.

How to make a Markdown table

  1. Type your column headings into the first row of the grid.
  2. Fill in the cells, or paste a block of cells from a spreadsheet into any cell. Use the Row and Column buttons to grow the table.
  3. Click the alignment button in each heading to switch between left, centre and right: left for text, right for numbers, centre for short labels.
  4. Check the code below the grid, and switch between Markdown and HTML.
  5. Copy the output and paste it into your README, issue, wiki or editor.

The Markdown Table Generator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or logged.

When to use it

README files and documentation

Configuration options, command flags and supported versions are all easier to scan as a table. The grid makes it easy to keep columns consistent as the list grows.

Comparisons in issues and pull requests

Before-and-after benchmarks, browser support and option comparisons read far better as a table in a GitHub comment than as a list of sentences.

Tables for sites that do not accept Markdown

Some CMS editors and email tools need HTML. The HTML output gives a plain, unstyled table that inherits your site's styles.

Good to know

  • Right-align columns of numbers so the digits line up and are easy to compare.
  • Pipes and line breaks inside cells are escaped for you, so a value such as A | B stays in one cell.
  • Markdown tables cannot merge cells or hold multiple paragraphs in one cell. For complex layouts, use the HTML output and edit it.
  • Keep cells short. Long text makes the raw Markdown hard to edit, even though it renders fine.

Frequently asked questions

How do you align columns in Markdown tables?

Use :--- for left alignment, :---: for center alignment, and ---: for right alignment in the header delimiter row.

How do you align columns in a Markdown table?

With colons in the separator row under the headings: :--- aligns left, :---: centres and ---: aligns right. The generator writes these for you from the alignment buttons.

Does this work with GitHub Flavored Markdown?

Yes. Tables are part of GitHub Flavored Markdown and are also supported by GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, Docusaurus and most static site generators.

Can I put bold text or links in a cell?

Yes. Ordinary inline Markdown such as **bold**, `code` and [links](https://example.com) works inside table cells; block elements such as lists and headings do not.
