How is the tip calculated when rounding per person?

When rounding per person up, the individual share is rounded to the nearest whole currency unit (e.g. $28.40 -> $29.00), and the tip is adjusted accordingly so the group covers the exact required amount plus generous rounding.

What is standard tipping etiquette?

In North America, standard restaurant tipping is generally 15% to 20% for good service. In many European and Asian countries, service is included, with small round-ups or 5-10% left for exceptional service.

Is tip calculated before or after tax?

Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal of food and drinks. However, calculating on the post-tax total is also common and slightly more generous to service staff.

What if people ordered different amounts?

This calculator divides the bill and tip evenly. For itemized bills with large discrepancies, calculating individual food totals first and applying the tip percentage to each subtotal is fairest.
