Pricing & Discount Info
You save $20.00 (25.0% total discount)
A discount calculation is simple in one direction and surprisingly error-prone in the others. This calculator handles the three questions that come up: what does an item cost after X% off, what percentage discount does a given saving represent, and what was the original price before a discount was applied. It also handles stacked discounts correctly, which almost nobody does mentally.
Formulas & Mathematical Logic
Discounted Price Formula
Formula 1Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount% / 100)Savings = Original Price - Sale Price.
How to calculate a discount
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage, or the sale price if you want to work out the percentage instead.
- Read the amount saved and the final price.
- For stacked offers, apply each discount in sequence rather than adding the percentages together.

When to use this tool
Checking a sale price is what it claims
Advertised discounts are sometimes calculated against an inflated list price, or simply mis-stated. Verifying takes seconds.
Setting a promotional price
Working backwards from the margin you need to the discount you can offer is the correct order for pricing a promotion.
Comparing competing offers
A flat amount off and a percentage off are only comparable once both are expressed the same way, which depends on the base price.
Things worth knowing
- Stacked discounts multiply, they do not add: 20% off then a further 10% off is 28% total, because 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72.
- 'Buy one get one free' is a 50% discount across two units, not 100% off.
- To find the original price from a sale price, divide by (1 − discount/100). A ₹720 item after 20% off had a list price of ₹900.
- Check whether the discount applies before or after tax — it changes the final figure.
