Online Camera

Take photos and record videos with your phone or webcam, with automatic enhancement, face-aware exposure, a low-light mode and natural-looking filters.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you add is uploaded.

What the Online Camera does

Laptop webcams and many phone browsers produce flat, grainy pictures: the camera hands the browser a raw video stream without the processing a phone's own camera app adds. This camera puts some of that processing back. Enhance measures every frame and gently corrects brightness, contrast and colour cast, then sharpens edges without sharpening grain. Low light merges several frames into one photo, which cuts noise in dim rooms while keeping anything that moved sharp. Face detection sets the exposure for the people in the picture, so a face in front of a bright window is not left in shadow, and keeps skin from being over-sharpened. Ten restrained filters and manual sliders let you set a look before you shoot, videos are recorded exactly as you see them, and full-screen mode turns the page into a camera app. Everything runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.

How to take better photos and videos in your browser

  1. Choose Start camera and allow access when your browser asks. On a phone, the back camera opens first; use the switch button for the front one.
  2. Leave Enhance on for balanced, sharper pictures. In a dim room, turn on Low light and hold still for a moment after pressing the shutter.
  3. Pick a filter under Filters and set its strength, or fine-tune brightness, contrast, warmth and more under Adjust.
  4. Press the shutter for a photo, or switch to Video and press record. Use the timer for group shots and the grid to line up the horizon.
  5. Choose Full screen to use it like a phone's camera app, with filters and settings a tap away. Press and hold the picture at any time to compare with the original.
  6. Open a photo or video from Your photos and videos to check it, change a photo's filter later, or download everything as a ZIP.

The Online Camera runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or logged.

When to use it

Clearer pictures from a laptop webcam

Webcams struggle under indoor lighting: faces look grey and backgrounds noisy. Enhance lifts the midtones and removes colour casts from ceiling lights, and Low light cleans up the grain, which makes a real difference for profile pictures, document snaps and quick product shots.

Recording a short clip or message

Record a video greeting, a how-to clip or a quick update for a team without installing an app. Pause and resume while recording, and the video is saved as MP4 in browsers that support it so it plays on any phone.

Giving an existing photo a consistent look

Choose Edit a photo to apply the same filters and adjustments to a picture already on your device. Saving creates a new copy, and the camera, location and other details stored in the original file are not carried over.

Good to know

  • Light matters more than any setting: face a window rather than sitting with it behind you.
  • Low light works best when the camera is steady. People who move keep the detail from the first frame instead of leaving a ghost.
  • On older phones choose Standard quality in Settings for a smoother preview and smaller videos.
  • Photos and videos are kept only while the page is open. Download the ones you want to keep before you leave.
  • Photos saved here contain no location or device details, so they are safe to share as they are.
  • Face detection is built for faces within about two metres, as in selfies and video calls. It downloads about 3.5 MB the first time and is off by default on phones with little memory.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos or videos uploaded?

No. The camera feed is processed in your browser and photos and videos are kept in the page's memory until you download them. Nothing is sent to TabBench or anyone else.

Why does the browser ask for camera permission?

Browsers always ask before a website can use the camera or microphone. The microphone is only requested when you start a video with Record sound turned on.

Does face detection recognise who is in the picture?

No. It only finds where faces are, so brightness and colour can be set for them and skin is not over-sharpened. It cannot tell people apart, and it runs on your device.

Does this camera make photos sharper than my phone's camera app?

Usually not: a phone's own app has direct access to the sensor and years of tuning. This tool closes much of the gap for webcams and in-browser cameras, which normally get none of that processing.

What format are the videos?

MP4 in Safari and recent versions of Chrome and Edge, which plays everywhere. Firefox and older Chrome record WebM, which plays in most browsers and in VLC.

Why is there no flash or zoom button?

Browsers only expose the flashlight and optical zoom on some Android phones, mostly in Chrome. When your camera supports them, the buttons appear on the preview.
